Voiles de Saint Tropez 2009: a successful celebration of the regatta 10th anniversary

Saint-Tropez, France -  296 boats participated to the 10th edition of this unique rendez-vous that gathered the most extraordinary modern sailing boats and the most beautiful classic yachts: from the latest Wally 130 to the 1885 auric yacht Partridge, 124 years of yacht design were on display in Saint Tropez!
Wally has been supporting the Voiles de Saint Tropez since its inception, and it has become an integral part of the event by aligning its fleet in the Quai d’Honneur offering a fascinating contrast with the top world classic yachts.
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Voiles de Saint Tropez, Luca Bassani, President and founder of Wally, was awarded by André Beaufils, President of the organising yacht club Société Nautique de Saint Tropez, for the attachment and loyalty to the event: Wally is the only sponsor supporting it since the beginning!

Since 2007, the Wally Class has its own race committee and separate courses from the rest of the fleet, with the start off the Pampelonne beach. This exclusive organisation allows to select and manage the number and type of races according to the weather, enabling the Wallys to have the best competition.
A record number of eleven yachts lined up in the Wally Class of this exceptional edition, ranging from the breakthrough new Wally 130 to the 24-meter milestone Genie, and including Esense, Dark Shadow, Y3K, Magic Carpet Squared, Open Season, Tiketitoo, Tiketitan, J One, and Ryokan 2.
For  the first time, the Wally classification was split into the Racing Division (seven boats) that includes the most racing oriented yachts in terms of equipment, crew, and sail inventory, and the Performance Division (four boats) that limits the number of sails and reflects a more Corinthian attitude of the owner and crew.

The week was characterised by very light wind conditions and sunny weather: an extension of the summer that pleased the spectators but affected the race organisation.
Six races were sailed over four days, ranging from windward-leeward to coastal courses.
Y3K confirmed the excellent performance showed three weeks earlier in Porto Cervo, taking line honours four times our of six, and winning the Racing Division by two points ahead of Tiketitan that was back on the racing circuit after three years. Dark Shadow won the Performance Division.
The most admired of the fleet was the super fast Wally 130: her incredibly sleek lines and high speed, combined with her deck layout and exterior styling colours (the red PBO!) attracted spectators and photographers, who followed the yacht very closely during each race.

Wally Division General Results:

  1. Y3K 10 p.
  2. Tiketitan 12 p.
  3. Open Season 13 p.
  4. J One 18 p.
  5. Genie 18 p.
