Saint Tropez, France – The 20th edition of the Voiles de Saint Tropez confirmed this iconic event as the world’s most spectacular gathering of classic and modern boats, organised by the Société Nautique de Saint Tropez and supported by Wally since the beginning.
More than 300 boats and 4000 sailors staged an unforgettable sailing week, framed with the celebrated French village and the gulf filled with both sail and power superyachts, modern and classic as well.
It is indeed an awe-inspiring yachting festival that each year attracts crowds of spectators and passionate sailors from all over the globe. The splendid regatta ends the Wally Class racing season and decides the podium of the Wally Trophy.
The Wally Class has the privilege to align the fleet in the old port, alongside the most beautiful classic yachts, and to organise its own races in front of Pampelonne beach.
Six yachts on the exclusive starting line (Galateia, J One, Lyra, Magic Blue, Magic Carpet 3, Tango) completed six races, four windward/leeward and two coastal courses, in light-medium breeze and generous sunshine.
Magic Carpet 3 and defending champion Lyra hardly fought for the top place in the podium, separated by one point only till the end of the week. The last day was in fact decisive in the bid for final victory and the BMW Trophy, that is awarded to the Wally Class winner. Lyra prevailed, while Magic Carpet finished second and J One third.
The three Wallycento Galateia, Magic Carpet 3 and Tango were the attraction of the event, both ashore and on the water: the battle among these beautiful yachts was truly engaging and breath-taking, with tacking duels and alternating leadership.
The Voiles de Saint Tropez also decides the Wally Class 2018 champion: Magic Carpet 3 and Tango were in tight competition for the coveted Trophy, awarding the most consistent Wally throughout the season. Magic Carpet 3 took the top spot, followed by Tango and J One.
The 2018 Wally Class season comes to an end, the first 2019 rendez-vous is Sail Racing Palmavela from 7 to 11 May. Wishing all the teams a great winter!
