Palma de Maiorca, Spain, 30 April - 4 May 2014 - Gaastra Palmavela traditionally kicks off the Wally Class racing calendar, and this year the regatta marked the 10th anniversary of the event, that was started in 2004 specifically for the Wally Class.
To celebrate this special edition, the Wally Class had the event record number of nine yachts on the starting line.
Angel’s share, Galma, J One, Kenora, Magic Blue, Magic Carpet Cubed, Open Season, Ryokan 2, and Tango G fiercely competed over four days in the magnificent bay of Palma.
The weather conditions were simply perfect, with a breeze ranging from 8 knots in the first day, to 10-12 knots in the third and fourth days, with a maximum of 18 knots in the second day, providing the best wind condition for each boat.
As it has always been in Palmavela since its inception, the race management was flawless, and gave the start to six races in total, four windward-leeward and two coastal courses.
Magic Carpet Cubed confirmed the superior performance and excellent crew work shown in the previous season. Her supremacy further improved with the winter modifications becoming the undisputed leader of the racing fleet.
With four victories and two second places, she won the Gaastra Palmavela in the Wally Division. Magic Blue (former Magic Carpet Squared) was second overall and last year winner J One (former Magic Carpet), was third.
The three original Magic Carpets in the first three places: what a reward for the passionate and dedicated Owner Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones !
The Wally Class will gather in two weeks in Menorca for the first edition of Menorca Maxi, May 21-25, where nine Wally will race for the first time in this beautiful island.
