Saint Tropez, France September 29-October 6 – 320 boats participated in the 15th edition of Les Voiles de Saint Tropez, the most spectacular and celebrated regatta of the World. This unique rendez-vous gathers the most extraordinary modern sailing boats and the most beautiful classic yachts, moored both in the port and in the bay transforming the iconic French town into the globe sailing capital for one week.
Wally is an integral part of the event by aligning its fleet in the Quai d’Honneur, offering a fascinating contrast with the top world classic yachts.
A week full of contrasts indeed, with a quiet start in calm weather, culminating with two fantastic sailing days on Wednesday and Saturday, providing the 4.000 sailors and 320 Classic and Modern vessels with excellent sailing conditions under a blazing sun. The 15th edition of the Voiles de Saint-Tropez proved once again the place to be, to put a smiling finish on a great sailing season. Good times ashore with parties on board, and the great musical atmosphere of the Village were only rivalled by the excellence of the regattas inside and outside the spectacular Gulf of Saint-Tropez. Among this year’s stars was the new wallycento Magic Carpet Cubed with her aggressive and sleek lines. The Wally Class welcomed two newcomers of the racing circuit: the Owner of Magic Blue –ex Magic Carpet Squared, and the Owner of Tango, both excellently steered their yacht!
Pampelonne Bay outside the gulf usually belongs exclusively to the magnificent Wallys. Twelve of them battled all week long, in either short courses or 15 mile coastal races. The two wallycentos Hamilton and Magic Carpet Cubed gave full value, racing aggressively all week long, with Sir Lindsay Owens-Jones’ latest Magic Carpet Cubed, faster in Saturday’s strong winds, coming out ahead by the slightest margin in real time. The regatta winner of the Wally Division is Open Season, with J One in second place and Magic Carpet Cubed a brilliant third.
Magic Carpet Cubed won the BMW Trophy, dedicated to the fastest Wally during the week, the real time winner.
Open Season won also the 2013 Wally racing series: tied with J One, the other leading performer of the season, she finished ahead thanks to a greater number of first places.
Congratulations to all the teams, and au revoir a Palma at the end of April 2014!
