Menorca Maxi 2015

Mahon, Spain – The Wally fleet keeps building-up and enchanted the spectators with 12 boats participating in the second edition of THE Menorca Maxi, the regatta dedicated to the Wally Class and invitational to other maxi yacht divisions (this year the Maxi72 class was invited), sponsored by Consell Insular de Menorca, and organised by Club Maritimo de Mahon.

Galma, Inti, J One, Kenora, Magic Blue, Magic Carpet Cubed, Lyra, Open Season, Ryokan 2, Sensei, Tango G, and Y3K fiercely fought for the Overall Trophy of the second event of the racing season, with three yachts ALSO competing  for the Group 80 Trophy (J One, Lyra, Tango G) and three for the Group 2 Trophy (Inti, Kenora, Ryokan 2).
The prizes included the Gino Bossi Trophy, for the first Wally in the combination of the two scheduled coastal races.

The wind has been light throughout the regatta, with a strong sun enhancing the turquoise colour of Menorca waters.
Six races were successfully sailed in the four-day event: four Windward/Leeward and two coastal courses, providing the competitors with a variety of conditions and tactical challenges.
The competition in the Wally Class was so high and tight, that four of the six races had four different winners creating unexpected upturning in the standings with the Overall Trophy, only assigned the last day.

The first day saw two wins of Open Season in both the WL courses.  In the 35 nm coastal course of the second day Open Season and Magic Carpet Cubed as well as J One and Tango G engaged IN spectacular tacking duels, with J One finally winning the race. The third day had two WL courses with Open Season and Magic Carpet Cubed both winning one race, but due to the discard of the worst WL result, Tango G climbed up to the first position. The last race, a 24 nm coastal course, was indeed decisive to assign the Overall Trophy that went to Open Season with a second position behind the defending champion Magic Blue.

Among the fleet, to be noted the new comer and reborn Lyra (former K2Wind, launched in 2000) completely refitted with new mast, keel, and sail plan, that showed impressive performance in the light wind condition, and winning the Group 80.
The Wally80 Inti, at her first race of the season, won the Group 2.
The Gino Bossi Trophy was won again for the second year by Magic Blue.
Congratulations to the winners, and to all the participants that made this event memorable!

The Wally Class racing will resume after the summer cruising, in Porto Cervo, for the iconic Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup (September 6-12). Don’t miss the Sardinian rendez-vous: 12 Wallys will be on the starting line for the third engaging event of the season, follow the live racing in this web site!
